I have tried sitting in every different position to get my boot in far enough and I have tried every standing position. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on how to correct this problem??? In Japan, i would estimate about 70% snowboard, and only 30% ski. Also the snowboarders here all ride like Shaun White, that is to say, they don't actually make any turns, they just do a series of 360's down the mountain.

Hello snowboard enthusiasts the world over! I'm sure you are all as excited as I am about the plummeting temperatures in hopes of plentiful frosty precipitation to come. But let us skip the pleasantries and get down to business here...using this tribe in ways heretofore unpossible before the invention of the internet.

First a little background for those of you that don't know me... I live on the East Coast (Jersey City in the house say yeah!). There is no such thing as "champagne powder" here, and if you were to tell a local about snow w/ 10% moisture content they would wrap you up in a straight jacket and drive you to the nearest padded room. You won't see snowflakes lookin all pretty and unique and crystallized, they fall in a mushy pile of wet heavy amorphous blobules.... and don't even get me started on our shorty hills that pass for mountain resorts here...i have to drive 4.5 hours each way every weekend to get to a summit that peaks 1000 feet below where most west coast resorts put their base lodges. Oh, the frustration...

As a result, I've recently started an annual tradition with a couple of friends, each year to book a winter trip to a destination that offers the type of riding we see in our favorite snowboard porn videos and our most exhilarating dreams. Last year's trip was to Summit county in Colorado, and while they didn't exactly have the knee deep stuff we were hoping for at the time, losing our breath at 14,000ft and dropping into the bowls of Breckenridge (followed by night riding at keystone) put a smile on our faces that stayed there for weeks! and of course memories of a lifetime.

So what's the damn point of this long winded story? I ever so digress...

While in Colorado, we couch surfed w/ friends in Denver and Boulder for a week, and we found the experience of local shredders invaluable on the hill and around town. We can fend for ourselves of course, but it's so much nicer to have somebody to point you in the right direction, or even better, come ride with you and make sure you have enough speed to clear that long traverse, or avoid that pain in the ass 2 mile mogul run, or pull you out of that chest deep treewell you just fell backwards into, not to mention saving hundreds of $$$ a night that of course translate into love and gifts showered upon said hosts in heaps.

So with that spirit in mind, I wonder if we can create something positive on this thread where people who happen to be so lucky as to live near a major powder destination and have couch or some floor space to give up for a week, step forward and offer it up to people on a snowboard holiday. Or if you're a local and know of some mom and pop type place trying to rent out a room for cheap, or offer up tips on lodging that would be otherwise difficult to find online. In return you will have some new buddies to ride with for a week, lots of free beer, food, gifts both material and spiritual, human gratitude, sexual favors if you're lucky and the knowledge that you too now have a couch w/ your name on it somewhere else in the world.

Let the steppin forward begin (especially if you live in Utah, Colorado, BC, Washington, Oregon, Alberta, Tahoe, Japan, France, Switzerland, Austria, Chile, Norway, Argentina, so on and so forth - you know who you are)

I'd be happy to go first - I live in Jersey City, NJ, not exactly a snowboarder's dream but a hip and lovely destination literally a 4 minute subway ride from downtown Manhattan. If you ever find yourself heading to NYC, look me up, and i will host and/or find you and your friends a place to stay...just mention the Rider Hosting Program to get your coupon!

I figured for $75 it was worth a try! Gotta be better than my old (and progressively more noodly) Burton Canyon 162.
Now, this is a surprise! While many people had thought Les Otten would make a return, it seems that he was out-bid by Boyne USA Resorts.
Michigan-based Boyne USA Resorts are buying Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley and Sunday River in Newry from American Skiing Co. The $77 million deal will be finalized at the end of July.
Boyne USA Resorts is a family-run business that owns mountain and golf resorts such as Boyne Mountain in Michigan, Big Sky Resort in Montana and Gatlinburg Sky Lift in Tennessee, according to information from Boyne.
Boyne will turn Sunday River into more of a four-season resort, complementing other community assets, including forests and a river offering activities such as canoeing, hiking and fishing.
Greg Sweetser, executive director of the Ski Maine Association, said Sunday River is No. 1 in total number of skier visits in Maine, while Sugarloaf/USA is No. 2. In total, they account for more than 50 percent of the skier visits in Maine.

I just found this...Bob is the guy that turned me on to board sports when i was 13...RIP, my friend...

Apr 6, 2007

In the Northwest, Barci is well known for his many passions. Whether it was surfboards, photography, skateboarding, snowboarding, cars, or his work as bike shop owner or salesrep for Seattle Bike Supply, he took on his interests with unbelievable enthusiasm and always at full throttle.

Bob Barci got his start in the bike industry in the early 70's, helping out his good friend and highschool pal Wally Parcels at Sunshine Bicycles on Orcas Island, on the weekends. By 1974, together they opened the first BIKEFACTORY in Lynnwood, which soon introduced their own brand of folding bike; the PortaBike. For the next 20 years, Bob and Wally operated BikeFactory; and made it one of the Seattle area's premiere bike and skate shops during the thriving 80's-selling plastic banana skateboards, urethane wheels and some of the sports' first BMX bikes.

Also during this time, Barci was an instrumental figure in the earliest days of snowboarding in the Pacific Northwest. Back in 1985, the legendary Mt. Baker Banked Slalom race was Bob's brain child (along with Tom Sims). In the 2006 snowboard documentary, titled "Platinum," Barci is interviewed, and displays the swallow-tail and finned boards they duct-taped their feet to back in the day.

In 1995, Barci joined Seattle Bike Supply, where he assisted his customers in more ways than one throughout the next 12 years. In 2002, the "Year of the fold-up alloy Scooter", Bob was awarded the prestigious "Employee of the Year" and "Salesman of the Year" by SBS.

Between his love for work, Barci was actively and constantly involved with the Washington State Ski Patrol and his car club. His collection of Subaru's and a replica AC Cobra have been shown at many car shows around the Northwest.

Bob is survived by his wife Nancy. Friends of Bob have been showing their support and are sharing their best memories on the Bob Barci blog - http://bobbarci.blogspot.com/

I sat down and booted up weather.com, clicked into the "ski" section and started looking at snow depth all over the US, then the northern hemisphere (Europe etc). This isn't comprehensive, there's a lot of hills that aren't mentioned and Canada doesn't even have any listings on the site, but...

Holy shit. I know it is bad this year, again... and hear it from friends & others about the lack of depth at their local hills, but man it's freaking plain not snowing normally worldwide. Tahoe down south looks like southern California, Maine & Vermont are practically closed, Arizona is basically closed, New Mex too. Utah is barely operating and if you've ever ridden the Bird you'll know that 50" of base is flat scary, Colorado has huge dumps that close Denver's airport for days but the mountains above are sitting on 50" of base instead of 300. France is dry, nothing in Northern Europe and the bears aren't even hibernating in Spain's mountains this year.

My little corner of Washington is pretty much the top snow depth worldwide with my hill at 111" with Mt Baker being a little deeper than 49 is. I've been reading about climate change since the early 80s and being an old surfer was always a weather-watcher type trying to figure out what storm in New Zealand was going to send me waves. The poo-poo types that work for Exxon saying that it's all bullshit and spending millions to convince people it isn't happening, and I'm really starting to wonder if what we do in winter is going to become a dead form of play soon. I know hills that have closed, low elevation places that just don't get enough snow anymore, and now I'm seeing higher elevation lifts having the same problems.

Are we fucked? Have we fucked the planetary climate balance enough that we've hit the tipping point and all the feedback loops inherent in our weather patterns are going to end our ability to find joy bombing fluff through the trees soon?

Yesterday I took my neighbor's fifth grader up and got her going. She figured out "falling leaf" and was starting to point and go then snap to her backside edge to slow down, she got it and by the end of the day was going pretty dang fast on #1 lift (even started not falling on her butt getting off). She loved it, and I just created another boarder babelet and I'm wondering if she'll be able to find enough snow in a few years to keep riding. Hell, I've got a new grand-daughter that I'm supposed to be putting on a board in about five years (yeah, they sure make little boards for the kiddies nowadays) and will I get to do that even?

Just a rant, just a worry, and I'm sitting here under cloudy skies with snow due tonight. I'm happy that I'm getting powpow days, and am being bummed that so many riders I know are sitting around not wanting to go up to their hills and get hurt trying to ride rock-filled crap that's only 20" deep. I've got friends in NorCal that are heading this way soon...

It's scary. And here's a link to something I read this morning:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/01/science/01climate.html?_r=1&ref=washington&oref=slogin

Wishing all who read this that the snow comes to you soon this new year.

Okay, I've taught both my neighbor and his fifth grader to ride this year. He's been up four time with me, serious teaching mode and he's linking "s" turns without too much wobble on the frontside on both hardpack and the wonderful two powder days he's been on. Very good sense of balance & control and I've been impressed. He's having way too much fun. Yesterday he went up with a friend of his who rides a little better but not much, for his fifth day on the hill. Remember this: FIFTH day on a snowboard.

I've taken his daughter up four times also though she hasn't quite got to linking backside & frontside yet. She's totally stoked and she'll be back up this weekend for her fifth day riding.

Now for the dumbest fucking thing I can imagine anyone doing on a board...

At the end of the day yesterday he and his buddy were on the way down, last run to the lodge and of course leg burn etc, and got a hair up their butt to go into the terrain park. No, I'm not shitting you. He launched one of the little kickers, butt slid himself of course, and then got up and kept going having decided that he could make the next one (his friend also was jumping off the damned things doing the crash & burn). He then proceeded to fly off one of the big ones with a 20 foot lateral air needed just to clear the flat top, landed on his head and broke his neck.

I kid you not. Fracture of the C-7. I got a call from the manager (they sell my gear on the hill and everybody knows me & that I've been teaching my neighbors) at 4:30 to let me know they were evac'ing him to the hospital. I spent last night babysitting their little ones while his wife & mom headed to Spokane where the local hospital transferred him. Supposedly it's not considered too "serious" and is a stable fracture but he's got 50% loss of feeling in his left arm at this point and what is called "hot forearm" by the specialists. Probably tissue swelling causing that. Hopefully.

His comment to the doctors? "Guess this means I can't go snowboarding any more this season." And yeah, he should be up & riding by next winter.

Anybody else with bonehead moves to report???

I spent a lot of time last year researching what board to buy, and had my choice narrowed down to a Donek, most likely their Wide, since I have size 11.5 feet. But the Never Summer folks had a demo day at Bogus Basin (45 mins from me) and I went up and tried a Titan 169, and nearly immediately fell in LOVE with it. I had never ridden a board with so much dampening, nor with such torsional rigidity! The thing felt like a Cadillac cruising down the choppy groomers, and I rode faster and felt more in control than I ever had on a snowboard. WOOT!

With the 169 length, it was a bear in tight trees, but for big mountain open groomer and choppy stuff it was a DREAM.

That said, I changed my mind from the Donek. However, after a season of thinking about it (and riding my crappy old beat up Burton Canyon 162) I am wondering if maybe I was too quick to be sucked into the massive damping of the Titan. Anyone ridden both these boards, who cares to comment?

thanks!
stiff board for girls?
Thanks

Although it is spring now down here in the valleys with green grass and flowers, the winter wonderland still exists and it's only a 20 minute drive from town. Yep, the snow has been piling up at the hill with another metre this past week. Unfortunately it's Whitewater's last weekend, not due to any lack of snow. The end of an epic season of powder and the shredding of it with screaming, grinning friends. Wow. I know of no other feeling of supreme elation and joy that quite parallels the feeling I get from cutting through fresh, bottomless light Kootenay powder. The rush of floating through the trees on the pillows of snow and then flying through the air over a fat roller, landing in an explosion of fluff, and ripping on. I #@%$*&'n LOVE it!!! I send a big shout out to all my brothers and sisters who know this feeling and love the winter to ride the snowy mountains. We are truely lucky. Here's to a great season and now... Bring on the sun!!!! Cause hey, summer is great too.

Who here feels that the x-games have exploited our sport for too long now? I went to the games in the summer of 1996. It was real, it was amazing, the banners were not covered in mountain dew advertising. Who feels that they are sometimes fixed? like Tony Hawk winning best trick 45 mins after the event was over and a winner already declared. Sure, Tony did some amazing, Earth shattering moves, but come on. Did we all seem to forget that Tony was about to release a new game around the same time? It is all publicity and advertising. Would you be so quick to be the game if Bucky or someone else won the event? Probably not, just goes to show the power of manipulation and how almost anything can be bought nowadays. Tony, if you are reading this, please forgive me, you are amazing, I know you are the greatest snakteboarder ever to shred, but this is how I feel. Same thing for the wonter games, which is what I originally meant to go on. Funny how Kelly Clark won the Women's Superpipe, but we all know that she is going to Turino very soon for an even bigger event. I can see stoking her up for it, and she should win, hell, she is one of the most bad ass riders ever, but does anyone else see the superficiality of this event?

i also just recovered from spinal fusion surgery and am trying to be slightly cautious about hitting the slopes. any advice regarding recovering from injury??? hahaha? because of this injury i'll most likely be taking it easy on park but would love a board that will be versatile as i get better. help! -cari
