Sugarloaf/USA and Sunday River Sold
Now, this is a surprise! While many people had thought Les Otten would make a return, it seems that he was out-bid by Boyne USA Resorts.
Michigan-based Boyne USA Resorts are buying Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley and Sunday River in Newry from American Skiing Co. The $77 million deal will be finalized at the end of July.
Boyne USA Resorts is a family-run business that owns mountain and golf resorts such as Boyne Mountain in Michigan, Big Sky Resort in Montana and Gatlinburg Sky Lift in Tennessee, according to information from Boyne.
Boyne will turn Sunday River into more of a four-season resort, complementing other community assets, including forests and a river offering activities such as canoeing, hiking and fishing.
Greg Sweetser, executive director of the Ski Maine Association, said Sunday River is No. 1 in total number of skier visits in Maine, while Sugarloaf/USA is No. 2. In total, they account for more than 50 percent of the skier visits in Maine.
