Tips on SA riding and travel

topic posted Thu, August 30, 2007 - 10:55 AM by  Karen
I am flying out in just a few days to Chile and Argentina, to ride Portillo, Arpa, Bariloche and Termas de Chillan!! Any pointers on a) best runs on those mountains (for someone who loves steeps and trees - think Alpental if you've been there) and b) fun stuff to do after riding? We'll be based out of Santiago the first four days, then Bariloche, then the Mission Impossible lodge in Las Trancas near Termas de Chillan.

I promise to send snow reports and a link to pix and/or bloggage - but I might not get to it until I return ;-)

Any recommendations on general travel in those countries would be great too.

I don't think you'll be finding any tree runs, but I could be wrong. The areas sit pretty high and are mostly above tree line. Everything will depend on the weather, I hope you get snow followed by sun.

And remember, all the dangerous aspects are reversed in the southern hemisphere. Northern slopes get the light while southern slopes sit in the shade. It is possible to encounter hard, solarized neve' on the north aspect, and just a few feet away around the ridge find frighteningly deep unconsolidated powder. Be careful, Andean powder can do weird stuff.

I recommend the Pesco sour for an apres' board cocktail.

    Have fun! I'm envyous.

I got to ride at Bariloche Argentina a few years ago and it was pretty great! I think it is a bit lower than some of the chilean areas and supposedly is getting more and more affected by global warming, but when I was there there was lots of sweet fresh powder! And there were some trees too. Really cool looking freaky old trees so different than what you would see in North America. Also I found that almost all the people stayed on the groomed runs, so there was tons of powder that stayed untouched and I did some wicked runs out of bounds on skier's left as I recall. Be careful and have a blast!
