Building the ultimate backyard park

topic posted Sun, November 5, 2006 - 11:24 AM by  Razr
I've been eyeing up my garage roof this fall, thinkin it would work beautifully if I could pile snow up to the edge and make a decent run out of it. My fence is just far enough away to build a little kicker off of, with plenty of room behind it to allow for good speed when you hit it, plus an old picnic table that is just crying out for frontside slides. I just need to know how to best go about it. I have a snowblower, shovels, stuff like that, how can I get it solidly packed? For all the DVDs I've watched, they don't show to much of the making of a jump. Help!!

you are gonna need some rock salt. It will help pack it down. You can get the big gabillion pound bag of it at the hardware store. There should be no shortage of rock salt in Michigan. They use it often on the roads. So when you go ahead and shape the jump make sure that it is level and you can pop off of it. DON'T form it so it just kicks you straight up into the air. Does this make sence? I wish I could draw you some visuals to help out.

check out this it might help further explain what is going down:

Also, going off of what the last post said, before applying any rock salt it will be a good idea to pack layers of snow as you go. I had a pretty big set up in my backyard last season and we used a small sheet of plywood to help tamp the snow down. Then we would add a few more feet of snow and repeat the tamping. For finer smoothing use your snowboard smooth and pack the final surface, you also add the rock salt at this point to give a more solid surface to whatever feature you are building.
